We Need to Change the Narrative
BREAKING NEWS: Thousands of civilians trapped in Sievierodonetsk, Ukraine, with water supplies dwindling / Parts of Yellowstone National Park may stay closed for 'substantial length of time' after severe flooding / Temperatures in the U.S. could soar as much as 20 degrees above average / U-Haul full of white supremacists preparing to disrupt Pride event.
All these things are happening or have happened over the last few days — and all of them are serious AF. Yet what headlines are a thousand percent dominating our media right now? Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump.
Now, sure, we can blame media organizations for the headlines, citing that they control the narrative — and yes, to a certain extent, that is entirely true. Yet, we must also realize that it is *us* that clicks through and constantly reads this shit. It is *us* that tunes in to watch ALL the latest Trump exposés. It is *us* that tells big media orgs that we prioritize Trump outrage over climate catastrophe when we choose to consume it above all else.
Now, yes of course, the Trump headlines are important, and yes his hate crimes are beyond grievous — yet they are not the be-all-and-end-all of what is happening in our world. There is a goddamn war happening in Ukraine. Temperatures are soaring across the planet and killing us. The U.S.’s gun epidemic is out-of-f'ing-control. These things are HAPPENING.
We can’t stand Trump — we all know that — and we have spent years bringing you the latest BS on this horrific man as it was vital we all took his pandemonium seriously and got him the hell out of office. Yet, we need to wake up from the all-encompassing trance that is Trump. We need to start consuming the media that matters for tomorrow, as well as what exacerbates us today.
Start changing the narrative of what our media orgs bring us, and fuck the outrage click-bait being 100% of our consumption. Click on the climate stories. Tune in to the civil justice documentaries. Read the gun control op-eds. Always.
We control this shit, folks. IF we choose to.
