Celebrate & Elevate Indigenous Communities
By Jo Lorenz
Standing against racial injustice means more than just performative social media posts.
Read, learn, share, donate. Uplift the communities of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour.
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was appallingly murdered at the hands of police offers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Following this tragedy, Black Lives Matter protests sparked across the globe in a concerted effort to fight ongoing acts of deplorable racism towards Black, Indigenous and People of Colour.
In my own country of Australia, the incarceration rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is amongst the highest of any group in the world. Since the Australian Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody released its report in 1991, there have been more than 430 First Nations people die in police custody.
So many folks posted a black square in solidarity of the Black Lives Matter movement following George Floyd’s death — yet solidarity must be followed with education and action. If we do not collectively accept accountability to dismantle this continuing systemic racism, then white supremacy and culturally embedded racism will continue to thrive.
The invaluable organisations that support and amplify the lives and voices of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and POC in Australia need your support. Use your time and privilege to read, learn, share and donate to these causes and charities in order to uplift the First Nations people of Australia:
